À Savoir en France | Things to Know While in France
A few quick cultural tips to help you feel more at home during your time in Paris and beyond:
Always say “Bonjour” (or “Bonsoir”)
When entering a shop, café, or boutique, it’s customary to greet the staff with a friendly “Bonjour” (before 6pm) or “Bonsoir” (in the evening). It’s considered polite and can totally change your experience — don’t skip it!
“Merci” goes a long way
A little courtesy is everything here. Say “Merci” (thank you), “S’il vous plaît” (please), and “Au revoir” (goodbye) when leaving.
Card-friendly, but…
Most places accept cards, but smaller cafés and market stalls may prefer cash or have a card minimum. It’s smart to carry a bit of euros just in case. And remember that AMEX is not always accepted.
Don’t expect speedy service
Dining in France is a leisurely affair. Meals are meant to be savored, and the check won’t usually come unless you ask: “L’addition, s’il vous plaît.” See the fast dining options below!
Taxis don’t stop just anywhere
Unlike NYC, you can’t hail a cab on the street. Use designated taxi stands or apps like G7 or Bolt. Uber also works in Paris.
Tap water is safe to drink
If you’d like water at a restaurant, ask for “une carafe d’eau” (tap water) or they’ll likely bring bottled water instead.
Visiting Museums
Paris is home to some of the most incredible museums, BUT they book up. If you plan to visit places like the Louvre and the Musée Dorsey, we suggest buying tickets now.
Carry a wine opener, and remember you can ask for wine bottles to go from wine bars
There is nothing better than to be able to open a bottle of wine in a park, along the Seine - wherever. When you land, grab a bottle opener, and remember the phrase: “Je peux emporter cette bouteille de vin?” or "à emporter" = to go / takeaway
